If you drive on the bypass south of the ethanol plant in South Bend, you will notice a massive pile of coal on the west side of the facility. Why, I wondered, if we needed to move away from fossil-fuel-based energy, would there be coal at the ethanol plant? Isn't it bad enough that a water-hungry plant like corn needed to be planted, harvested and transported using fossil-fuel-charged engines; what is mercury- and sulfur-spewing coal, mined at the risk of human life or blasted from mountain tops doing at an ethanol plant?

According to a National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition posting:

http://www.e85fuel.com/e85101/faqs/production.php

to produce ethanol requires at least two heating steps, once to separate the fermentable sugars and later to distill the water. I would guess that the mountain of coal at our ethanol plant is used for at least one of those heating processes needed for producing ethanol. Gee, doesn't sound very environmentally friendly to me.

This is a biofuel embraced by our not-so-progressive Congressman Joe Donnelly. Wait, it gets worse, he just introduced a bill to give TAX BREAKS to corporate entities to build pipelines to transport ethanol!

What Donnelly OUGHT to be doing is funding the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program so cities like South Bend can finance emission-free hydroelectric, wind and solar generators.

What Donnelly OUGHT to be doing is introducing TAX BREAKS to CITIZENS who install solar panels and wind turbines on their property.

Donnelly's "reassessment" of his stance against drilling in ANWR and in coastal waters should more accurately be described as a "reassessment" of his re-election bank account.

Thank you for your interest in this article. I, too, raised my concern about the article in a meeting with Congressman Donnelly today. He assured me that he did not say that he favors deportation. He asserts that he was misquoted. He added that the article will be removed from his website tomorrow (Tuesday), as today is a federal holiday.

The electoral college, tight voter I.D. requirements such as Indiana's and the presence of Democratic superdelegates all have the same effect, they are obstacles which ordinary Democratic voters must overcome before making a difference. They skew election results. All three should be abolished.

I saw that the deadline for running somebody against Joe Donnelly was February 22.

Is it possible to put up somebody to oppose Donnelly to at least create some discourse within the progressives in Michiana who are forced to support him?

We shouldn't take this. We shouldn't allow ourselves to be in this predicament where the Republicans are awful so that makes Democrats so bad but the Democrats are spineless, gutless, and inadequate so that makes us hate that we have to vote for them.

We the people can put up true leaders to be elected to the House of Representatives. We should do it even if we think we will lose just because it's right.

Joe sees to it that he gets a lot of attention working for veterans. No problem there. They deserve much more from their country than they get. Unfortunately, he stays as mum as possible about the need to keep our men and women in uniform out of harm's way unless it's absolutely necessary. Enabling Bush to keep the Iraq war grinding on endlessly isn't exactly standing up for those doing the fighting and dying.
